Writer's Block, Causes and How I believe it can be overcomed...

A Writer's Block  is a conditioned that many of us writer's come across during one or the other stage of our writing process. During the period a writer/author develops a certain mental block which prevents him/her from providing a good quality of work or in some  cases no work at all. You can simply assume that it is the time period during which The Muses of inspiration are at their lowest.

Possible Causes of it:

  • Over-stressing yourself with too much work: As they say that too much of everything is not good, so too much of work, whether it is writing or non-writing work can tire a person's mind and body. And a tired mind is not a very productive mind.
  • Emotional state of the writer: Sometimes as it is with me, a writer's emotional conidition or "MOOD" affects their writing too. Although it is a bad practice, but being a human filled with emotions, the emotions do tend to bundle up and show out in our writing. (For example: when you're sad you mostly come up with a sad/, melancholy piece of writing, when you’re happy the writing is happy, when you’re angry, it’s angry and when you’re in the mood for some fun, it may be charming, witty, humorous and even adventurous.
  • Situations in daily life: Then being human’s we have our lives and families and lots of stuff happening out and about us, besides the writing and sometimes the day to day troubles, situations sneak up and find a way in your writing to thereby corrupting the work
  • Environment that you sit in to write a story: An Environment that you sit in also affects your writing,/(For Example: A noisy environment might be disturbing to some, like a playground, a home filled with kids…etc)

Solutions to tackle the Problem:
  • Take a Break: When you feel like you are experiencing a block and you’ve had it, it’s enough! Go get up, leave your notepads, laptops, tablets alone and go do something normal. Live life! Do some home chore, watch a movie, go outside for a fresh morning walk because that is what is lacking and you need to let you mind rest to help your muses go back to their work.
  • Choose the time of the Day: One thing I do mostly is select a lot in my day which I keep for writing and only writing. This is usually early in the mornings when everyone’s asleep or late at night also when everyone’s retired to bed. This provides me with a chance to focus on my work without my folks feeling I’m neglecting them. And Some of just don't feel that good not giving enough time to or loved ones. Besides that the times that I’ve mentioned are the quite times of the day, where one can get on with their writing work with minimal noise and distraction.
  •  Inspire yourself: In most cases if the writer’s block is too severe it may need you to take a two-three days or even a week’s leave from writing. In that duration try to Live your Life (again!!) and be inspired by all that is around you, the nature, its beauty, the plants, birds, animals, sceneries. The more relaxed you are the more inspired you’d be.
  •  Watch a Movie or Read a Book: This is one thing I try to eliminate the block completely. Pick up a random channel and watch a movie playing on. Any arbitrary movie!!  Or Pick a random book to read. This is one of the effective tchniques against fighting day-day stress as well. “Out of Sight, out of mind they say,” so when you’re away from work and really enjoying yourself. That is when your stress will be reduced the most which is also when new ideas will flow in.
Note! Never Read a book or watch a movie in the same genre as your writing, it can tend to mess up with your story too because sometimes people start picking up ideas from them consciously or unconsciously . It destroys your Originality.

  • Become CHEF!: One of the bad habits yet effective. Leave your work and get to the kitchen and start a recipe from zero. Cooking takes your mind off stuff and gives you time to think about other things as well. Also something I recommend for stress. Try to be creative and come up with fancy garnishing designs with lots of colours on the plate, (Maybe! a Pizza, a pudding, caramel, salad, or something chocolaty hmm…) Coured food stuff add colours to your imagination. Chocolate inspires but warning it adds calories too… because you have to cook and eat too be Inspired. So apparently the next best things is to...
  • Go for a walk/jog: Don’t just eat and sit be inspired and be more inspired go for an early morning, evening or even a night walk/jog. Dress up sporty, play the character that you are in. Live the moment. When you jog, look at the scenery, or your surroundings to get some freshness. I usually go for gardens with greenery, the muses love that! (Smiling!)
  • Listen to Music: Another effective way is to listen to music to set your mood in especially works for romantic and action parts of a story. “Music is the food for the soul,” so if you need yourself to be inspired to bring out your creativity listen to something soothing, calm or romantic or fast depending upon the mood you want yourself to be in for the writing. (This works very well! I personally tried it.)
  • Change the Environment: If you can afford to and you don’t have other preoccupations like, kids, family, home chores, other works etc. Try to go sit in a café or a restaurant or a garden even and write in the full experience of the surroundings new surroundings give new ideas. And if you can’t change places of writing having to much to do in practical life, as I usually do, change the rooms. What do I mean by that yes! Change the room you are sitting in and writing. Some people prefer to work in one place like their quiet office or work space. But when I usually grow tired, I prefer changing location. And if not at big level then at a small level, from bedroom, to dining room to the patio, depending upon the time, weather and availability of space.
  • OR JUST WATCH SOME IMAGES ON THE NET! If you can’t do any of the above, then just browse through some lovely images of nature, wondrous places of the world for on spot relaxation and refreshment.

Lastly:

You may try one or more than one technique simultaneously or a combination of them to see which works out best for you. But I guarantee you that they work the best. Please do comment and let me know what method worked best for you. I’d be more than glad to hear from you all friends.

Happy Writing!

Yours,
Hana .P .B

Book Review: The Heir (The Selection Series, Book 4)

Date Read: 12th- March -2017

Book Cover:

Book Review:
I found the book amazing, a great piece of entertainment to read. I like the storyline set 18 plus years in the future. Though it broke my heart to see an older version of Maxon Schreave and America Singer…
The way the author carried the story forth was amazing and I myself being an author realize putting the idea into concept and forming a reality of it takes quite some time. And to portray a 'male version' of The Selection was awesome. I mean a group of females put into a common room I can understand. But how the author managed to out a bunch of guys under the same roof, competing with each other for Eadlyn’s hand (which by the way, she doesn’t want to give) is just an ordeal. I mean ladies in a room they’ve got so much stuff to talk about, to do but guys…it was good to see the story proceed with minimal brawling. Being an avid reader, I think I see where the story is headed…

About the Characters:
I loved Eadlyn’s character on how she has to fight between duty and what she believes is right for her ownself. The concept of a female in power and how it’s not easy for her to relinquish control and trust someone, letting them in through that wall… and Eadlyn’s inner battle/ conflict with that perspective, is well written and very understandable. From an author’s POV I commend the author for that.
Maxon as a Father and America as mother have been given great supporting characters. Ahren’s character as a brother is an awe… Aspen and Marlee’s families have been put in nicely.

For the selected: One word descriptions on some characters would be:
Henri (sweet), Hale (ever-present), Kile (Innovative and well Hmm…), Baden (I’m not sure), Jack ( a jerk), Erik (Great Friend) I love Erik’s character for honestly the self-sacrifice he shows supporting Henri, and being ever loyal, all the time not revealing his very presence or boasting about his job, esp. when he could’ve had the possibility of being a selected (had he entered and gotten picked i.e.)
In the end of the book Ahren’s character did what was not expected of him…left me in a bit of a shock… well that’s fiction
Recommendations are so on…I’d love to see how the next book (The Crown) goes.

Book Review: The One (The Selection series Book 3) by: Kiera Cass

Review
(Okay I know this one's too short guess I had just enough time to write this.)

I found the book great, an awesome piece of writing. I believe the author has done an incredibly beautiful job. The confrontation between Maxon and Aspen was dramatic in a good sense...Though i felt bad for Aspen. He was loyal to the end. (Sorry for the spoiler...He didn't die Lol!)
I still feel that America Singer's character could've been better and that she played both guys somehow which I didn't like. The ending was heartrending and concise to what I had expected. I would surely like to read more from the author...

Book Review: The Crown (The Selection series Book 5)

Okay so I figured it was really tedious copying and transferring reviews from my Goodreads Anyone who would like to read a review on the "The Crown"
Here is a review by Hana. P. B:

Wait I just realized some people may not have Goodreads account so

Reposting from Goodreads to make everyone's lives easier:

Review:
The Book was all in all good, a bitter sweet stuff for me. I really wasn't expecting him to be the selected one, up till the end. I don't want to give away and spoilers hence the word 'him'
But seriously???
The plot was good, I was expecting a bit more of the action as in Maxon and America Singer's story but I was a little disappointed in that aspect. It was a sweet story in the end but somehow missing something for me!
Eadlynn was sweet and yes authoritative a great combination of characteristics.
Kile was my favourite among the selected, shown to be nice guy! Henry I felt a bit sorry for him with his inability to speak English but loved the way the author had shown that knowing or not knowing a language was not what Eadlynn saw in a person for choosing him for a life time.
Marid charming guy! where did he come up from? And I had my suspicions on him right from the beginning!
Overall I'd say
The book could've been a bit longer... but it was an okay read!

Book Review: The Elite (Selection series Book 2)

Date Read: 22-27 March 2017

Review:
I liked book 2 But seems to me it's moving too slow...
America singer's character still remains unsure of what she wants, in other words it doesn't grow at all.
There are considerable differences in the Maxon's Character and I found it good!
The story line is great but again moving too slow...
Personally I don't like Aspen's character...though he shown to be the guy which many would sympathize with as we read the story...But he's hasn't done much to help with the other character's situation... let alone worsen it...
The story has a certain intrigue which I love But to me book 1 was better than book 2. Let's see how the third book is...

Book Review: The Selection (Book 1) by Kiera Cass

Date Read: 17-22 March-2017
Review:
"I found the book good to read, a fun-filled entertainment source...
The characters were great, I loved America singer and Prince Maxon's character.
Prince Maxon: though a pretty calmed down, down to earth behaviour for a prince that he had...I found him awesome...He was nice to the contestants, understanding and able to relate to the participant's situation.
America Singer: She was just good all in all.
I didn't like Aspen's character, I'm not sure why...
The story line: was good....But since the selection was hosted on TV (like a TV show) I didn't get much of the TV show feeling later on, as I read into the book.
The writing style: was okay, I mean unlike some books this was easy to read in a flow...
Overall: I loved the book, good enough to go to book 2

Book Review: Throne of Glass Book (1)

Hey there All. So besides being a writer I'm a reader to. So I thought why just keep my reading experiences to myself why not share them. Hence I decided to write a book reviews ...Actually I've been doing do for quite sometime now here's one I wrote on Throne of Glass

Date read: April 2017

Review:

"So that is what the fuss was about!!! I had like a dozen recommendations there for this book!

Okay The first in the book series, Not too bad I must say, Fantasy is so my genre...esp. High fantasy.
The author has portrayed the story so well, It made me fall in love with the story, it felt as if I was really there. : The author's technique of writing is really good and I felt my imagination running all throughout the story.

The characters: I found the main character, Celaena Sardothien to be quite good honestly. Though I have to agree that there were times that she was way too complacent, I mean as an assassin of Adarlan, she was fetched of from Endovier and put into this contest and she had absolutely no say in it. She could have at least fought and shown some resistance to people trying to push her into the unknown situation.
Anyways I think it’s the author’s part to tell the story and when I am reading a book, I am not an author, I am a reader and my job is to read and enjoy the entertainment, For every author has a story to tell, and it is their story. As for Dorian, Chaol and Nehemia’s characters they were quite good too. I think the author has added quite a mystery to each character. The King has something up his sleeve I so doubt it. I’d like to see how these characters grow out through the series.
The story being interest I’d like to see how it turns out in book 2… I recommend it to anyone who loves to read fantasy, high fantasy. It certainly adds to the imagination. "
